La filiformidad es una forma de escritura tendente al abandono y a la relajación gráfica. Cuando estudiamos las letras en los primeros años escolares, la representación que se les da a todos los alumnos es la de claridad absoluta. Tanto vocales como consonantes están previamente definidas y hay que acercarse en lo posible a su consecución.
Es por esto que al encontrarnos con un escrito en el que se nos presentan una serie de palabras prácticamente lineales, sin formas definidas algo fuera de la normalidad sucede que se nos escapa de las manos. Parecen más unos hilos que se deslían por el renglón.
Estos individuos precisan de los cambios con la mayor celeridad. Pueden adaptarse a las circunstancias con mucha facilidad pues son versátiles y no desentonan en distintos ambientes aunque sean dispares. Suelen ser estupendos oradores. Lo más negativo de los poseedores de estos escritos, es su impaciencia.
En general les cuesta menos llegar al fondo de las cosas, lo captan en su esencia y luego pasan a otra cosa. Esto les permite resolver situaciones aun siendo estas de lo más dispares.
Sabemos que la presión otorga a la escritura la energía que en mayor o menor medida le facilita al sujeto hacer pinitos hacia sus propios fines. A mayor presión, mayor aguante del sujeto ante las dificultades u obstáculos. Suelen ser tenaces y poco influenciables.
Cuando parece que cede ante el otro, en realidad es sólo una táctica para salirse con la suya aunque por el camino tenga que hacer cambios imprevistos.
Posee una gran vitalidad y una curiosidad natural que suele mantenerle en un estado de ansiedad continua. Mantener una relación de pareja con ellos, se puede convertir en todo un galimatías ya que no todo el mundo está preparado para adecuarse a sus rápidos cambios de planes.
 
En profesiones en las que existen altas situaciones de riesgo, como políticos o médicos, (por ejemplo Alfredo Rubalcaba) y en donde se han de tomar determinaciones en la que su propia letra les delataría, la filiformidad es la forma más cómoda de eludir responsabilidades.
Al no ser posible por el lector de traducir lo que tiene ante su vista, todo está por demostrar. Está bastante extendido el argumentar que durante la toma de apuntes se perdió el gusto por la estética gráfica, cosa improbable viniendo generalmente de universitarios con una envidiable formación académica.
